This view was taken from the west bank of the Hudson, looking southeast towards Troy and Rensselaer County. Here the descending rapids of the river begin to join the tidal waters of the Hudson at Troy. In the center distance is the Union Bridge which spanned the swift current between Waterford and Lansingburgh, erected in 1804 and destroyed in 1909. This view was intended for a projected series of engravings by John Hill (q.v.) taken from originals by John William Hill.
