This watercolor was intended for the Hudson River Portfolio but was not included in the published work.

Gallery Label: 
A Catholic priest, the subject was a professor of moral philosophy at the St. Paul (Minnesota) Seminary, his alma mater, from 1902 to 1915; he was professor of moral theology and industrial ethics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., from 1915 until his retirement in 1939. He was elevated to the rank of monsignor by Pope Pius XI in 1933. Ryan wrote extensively on labor issues, and through his writing promoted improvements in the rights and wages of the working man.
