These musket balls were found in 1892 by A.C. Chenowith on Seaman Avenue at the British camp on the Dyckman farm, which extended between Seaman and Payson Avenues and 204th Street, in Washington Heights. Two of the musket balls are marked with indentations that may be the toothmarks of soldiers. Soldiers would often chew musket balls as they were being whipped to allieve pain.

This scabbard point was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse deposit near a military camp and fort at Richmond, Staten Island. Built after the arrival of British forces under General William Howe in July, 1776, the fort was occupied by British and Hessian troops until evacuation in 1783. The point was fastened to the end of a soldier's bayonet scabbard.

These buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee in Ontario, Canada along the Niagara River near Fort George, a British fort built in 1795. The buttons were worn by privates of the 49th Regiment who were stationed in a camp outside the fort. The regiment was stationed at the fort when it was captured by American forces on May 27, 1813.

Brass sword shoulder-belt-plate; slightly curved, oval plate with the name of its corps and a British crown above a foliate cypher engraved on front; two studs and hook on back.

Gallery Label: 
This plate was worn on the sword shoulder-belt of an officer of Butler's Rangers, a Loyalist corps raised during the early years of the American Revolution. They were recruited in 1777 from Tryon County, New York by Colonel John Butler, and in alliance with Iroquois bands raided the frontiers of New York and Pennsylvania. The plate was found at Butler's Barracks, a wartime headquarters for the Rangers located at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada.

Built in 1795, the fort was captured by American forces on May 27, 1813, and occupied by them until December. Tobacco residue on the inside of the bowl indicates that the pipe was smoked.

This ice creeper was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse pit at Fort Haldimand, a British fort on Carleton Island in the St. Lawrence River in New York, just below the Canadian border. Built in 1779, the fort commanded passage of the river and was retained by the British until its destruction by American forces in 1812. Soldiers wore ice creepers on the bottoms of their shoes, and tied them in place by passing rope through the loops on top.

This belt clasp was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse pit at Fort Haldimand, a British fort on Carleton Island in the St. Lawrence River in New York, just below the Canadian border. Built in 1779, the fort commanded passage of the river and was retained by the British until its destruction by American forces in 1812. The clasp attached a belt buckle to a belt; the engraved decoration was made by the soldier who wore the belt.
