Description: 
Stoneware fragment excavated at the British military camp on the Dyckman farm in Washington Heights, Manhattan; body fragment; buff-colored with brown slip on exterior and interior.

This stoneware fragment was excavated in 1916 by Charles A. Maver on Payson Avenue near the corner of Academy Street, at the British camp on the Dyckman farm. The camp extended between Seaman and Payson Avenues and 204th Street in Washington Heights. The fragment was owned by a British or Hessian soldier, by a member of a soldier's family, or by a civilian living or working in the camp.

These buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee in Ontario, Canada along the Niagara River near Fort George, a British fort built in 1795. The buttons were worn by privates of the Queens Rangers, a Loyalist corps recruited in New York by British Captain John Simcoe in 1776. The Rangers were given the title of First American Regiment in 1779, and were maintained by the British in Canada until their disbandment in 1802.

This dish was found in February, 1893 inside the buried hulk of a vessel during digging for a power house on the cable road at Front Street, between Broad and Whitehall Streets in lower Manhattan. The ship was probably sunk as ballast for landfill sometime between 1770 and 1820.

Built after the American surrender of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776, the camp was occupied by British and Hessian troops until evacuation in 1783.
