This Jew's harp was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse pit at Fort Haldimand, a British fort on Carleton Island in the St. Lawrence River in New York, just below the Canadian border. Built in 1779, the fort commanded passage of the river and was retained by the British until its destruction by American forces in 1812. Jew's harps were small instruments that produced tones when held between the lips and tapped with a small metal strip.

This pipe was excavated by Reginald P. Bolton, William L. Calver, and others before the formation of the Field Exploration Committee in 1918, in Hut E on Payson Avenue at the British camp on the Dyckman farm, which extended between Seaman and Payson Avenues and 204th Street, in Washington Heights. The pipe was found inside of a hut built in 1776 by British soldiers on land that was once used as a campsite by Native Americans. Tobacco pipes could be sacred to Native Americans but were also made for trade with Europeans, especially soldiers. While this pipe was made by a Native American, it was not necessarily used by one.

Gallery Label: 
This belt-plate was found near Lake Champlain in New York, and was worn by a private of the 70th Regiment at the point where his cross-belts intersected in the middle of his chest. The regiment arrived in Quebec in November, 1813, and took part in the unsuccessful British offensive against Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain in 1814. The plate may have been thrown away by a soldier during the expedition, or been taken from the uniform of a soldier killed in action.

This bale seal was found at Fort Erie, a British fort on the Niagara River in Ontario, Canada. The seal was used to label goods that were shipped from London to British troops stationed at the fort. Fort Erie was captured by American forces on July 3, 1814, and was unsuccessfully besieged by the British from August until their abandonment of the siege on September 21, 1814.
