Description:
Bone buttons, bone button molds, large bone fragments, and iron cutting tool; buttons are disks with one hole in the center; molds are flat strips of bone with circular cutouts; tool is pointed at one end. Framed with text panel, photograph on reverse of frame.

These objects were excavated in 1923 by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse dump near the Revolutionary War barracks at West Point, a series of forts and barracks built in Orange County, New York by the Continental Army. American soldiers cut the molds from the bones of domestic animals, and shaped buttons in the molds using the cutting tool. The buttons were covered with cloth, and worn on areas of the uniform where regulation military buttons were not required.
