They were housed for many years as part of the Reginald Pelham Bolton Collection of Revolutionary War Relics in the Jumel Mansion, on 160th St. and Edgecomb Ave. The practice of sheathing gunflints with lead was widespread in the American forces, and was apparently adopted by some British or Hessian forces.

These bricks were excavated by Reginald P. Bolton and others from the floors of twenty huts that were built onto the side of a hill that once stood on the east side of Broadway at Arden Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Built after the surrender of Fort Washington by American forces on November 16, 1776, the camp was occupied by British and Hessian troops until evacuation in 1783.

Description:
Lead musket balls; one has been cut in half; another has been cut into quarters; four have hollow centers; six musket balls have a hole pierced through the center: three of these are flat and disk-shaped; one musket ball has an iron nail driven through it; the other musket balls have many small surface indentations.

These musket balls were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee at Revolutionary War sites in New York City. The bullet driven through with a nail was found with British military buttons in a refuse pit near a camp at 213th Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan. The halved and quartered bullets were also made by soldiers, and were designed to come apart after firing.

These musket balls were excavated in 1922 by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse deposit outside the south ramparts of Fort Washington. Built by the Continental Army in the summer of 1776, the fort extended west along 183rd Street from Fort Washington Avenue to Pinehurst Avenue. The fort was captured on November 16, 1776 by British and Hessian forces, and was occupied by them until 1783.
