These artifacts were found at Libbey Castle near Fort Tryon, a British fort in Washington Heights, Manhattan. They were loaned by Mr. Jonas Libbey and stored for many years as part of the Reginald Pelham Bolton Collection of Revolutionary War Relics (Case 2, No. 63) in the Jumel Mansion, at 160th Street and Edgecomb Avenue. The fort functioned as the northern extension of Fort Washington, and the American artillerymen stationed there were overrun by Hessian forces on November 16, 1776.

This iron fragment was found by Mr. Jonas Libbey at Libbey Castle near Fort Tryon. Built by the Continental Army in the summer of 1776, the fort extended along 192nd Street at Fort Washington Avenue and functioned as a small, northern extension of Fort Washington. The fort was captured by British and Hessian forces on November 16, 1776, and was named Tryon in honor of the royal governor of New York.

These buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse deposit near a military camp and fort at Richmond, Staten Island. Built after the arrival of British forces under General William Howe in July, 1776, the fort was occupied by British and Hessian troops until evacuation in 1783. The buttons were worn on the uniforms of privates in the 37th British Regiment.

These musket balls were excavated by Reginald P. Bolton and others before the formation of the Field Exploration Committee at a sanitary camp that extended east of Broadway, between 196th and Ellwood Streets. The camp was built in the summer of 1779 to quarantine British and Hessian soldiers infected with a fever that was sweeping through the military camps in Washington Heights. The flattened bullets may have been used as gaming pieces by quarantined soldiers.
