Description:
Diaphragm mimeograph consisting of wooden box opening to reveal set of compartments, with diaphragm (consisting of frame, stencil, and printing-bed) stacked on top, also with sheet of paper mounted on cardboard printed with script and line drawing of woman's profile; in compartments, stand with metal attachments to hold roller (missing), roll of oiled papers, tube of ink in cardboard box, crumpled paper, round cardboard lid, and piece of sponge; lithographed panel and painted inscription (in red, gold, and green) on front, with printed papers attached to inside of lid (torn and stained with ink) and bottom of box; two metal hooks swing up to screws on front of lid, to fasten box.

This time capsule was deposited at the New-York Historical Society in 1914 by the Lower Wall Street Business Men's Association, with the intention that it be opened in 1974, then sealed again until 2074. Never opened in 1974, the chest was unsealed at a ceremony held on October 8, 2014. A new time capsule, to be opened in 2114, was created and sealed at the same time. The contents placed in the chest in 1914 are available in the New-York Historical Society Library.

Description:
Sheet iron strong box; flat lid with applied border with squares with beveled edges at corners, and keyhole at center within shallow horseshoe-shaped compartment (key is lodged in hole); each side with rectangular panel with laminated decoration consisting of two diamond-shaped layers superimposed on two rectangles with concave chamfered corners; "WELLS FARGO" painted in red on front, and oval cast iron handle hinge-mounted to each side; pedestal base with strip of molding surrounding top; interior painted red, with painted landscape on rectangular box-like projection on inside surface of lid.

According to information received from the donor, this safe was acquired by his ancestor Gerard Bancker (1740-1799) from William Alexander (Lord Stirling) in 1783. Bancker, who had been appointed Treasurer of the State of New York in 1778, used the safe until the end of his tenure in 1798. The safe then passed to his brother, Evert Bancker; then to Evert's son, Charles Nicoll Bancker; then to Charles's son, James Albert Bancker, a great-uncle of the donor.
