Gallery Label: 
The American Republican Party, formed in 1843, attracted nativists and promised reform at a time when dissatisfaction with government was widespread. In the elections of 1844 it nominated as its mayoral candidate the publisher James Harper, who won the election. Harper and other Native American Democrats failed to fill their campaign promises and were replaced by Democrats in the elections of 1845. The copper engraved central image of George Washington is identical to that in 1940.102 and INV.5476; ribbons which commemorate the Washington Monument.
