This medal of honor was presented to Clifford Thomson, First Lieutenant, Company A, First New York Calvary for his role in the battle at Chancellorsville, VA on May 2, 1863. He averted the defeat of the army by volunteering to approach the enemy to ascertain its position. Though in the midst of friendly and enemy fire, he returned unharmed. He served the Union until November 27, 1896.
