The "General Slocum" was chartered for a Sunday School excursion by St. Mark's German Lutheran Church on June 15, 1904. While on the East River, the boat caught fire and burned, and over one thousand people were killed. According to the accession records, this lantern is the stern light from the boat. The donor, Charles R. Sackmann, was President of the Organization of the General Slocum Survivors, located at 187-11 104th Street, Hollis, L.I., at the time of the donation.
