The N-YHS has strong holdings in documents, objects and photographs related to the steamship 'General Slocum' and its tragic burning on June 15, 1904. The ship burned during a church picnic expedition, near Hell Gate in the East River. Survivors and bodies washed up on North Brother Island. Approximately 1021 people were killed, including many children of the German Catholic immigrants on the boat. N-YHS owns a ship's lantern from the General Slocum, a carved relic said to be wood from the ship, and scrapbooks relating to the disaster. Additionally there is an in-depth history of the family of Adella Liebenow Wotherspoon who lost two sisters and other relatives on the boat that day, and was the oldest living survivor of the disaster. She died in January 2004.
