A. Oakey Hall (1826-1898) was mayor of New York City from 1868 to 1872. Known as "elegant Oakey," he is best remembered for his alliance with corrupt Tammany Hall. The cartoonist Thomas Nast campaigned against A. Oakey Hall and other corrupt New York City politicians. Hall's pince-nez always featured prominently in Nast's satires.
