Description:
Rectangular tortoise shell card case with straight line of piqué border around all the edges, the lid has a hinge on the right side and a metal clasp fastener on the left, the inside is lined with red silk, the center of the front has an inscription on a rectangular metal plate.

Description:
Pince-nez with blue-tinted glass lenses and hard rubber frames; oval lenses are connected by flexible steel bar; loop below one lens for attaching ribbon or chain; spur below one lens and knob below opposite one for holding pince-nez closed. When closed, pince-nez fit into burgundy soft leather case (b) with one rounded end and one open end.

This pince-nez belonged to William H. Paine of New York City. Tinted lenses such as these were used by people who needed to see in the dark, such as railway conductors. Paine was a civil engineer who worked on the Brooklyn Bridge and the Hudson River tunnel.

Oblong card case made of silver filigree in a floral design, the collar around which the lid slips is worked in an imbricated design; the card case is housed in a box with a hinged lid, covered on the outside with silk machine-woven tapestry in a floral design throughout, in green red and yellow, the inside is lined with powder blue silk.

Navy blue leather rectangular card case with rounded corners, gold scroll design bordering one side, the same design tooled on opposite side; when opened, the left side is lined with pink moiré and has a card compartment, the other side is lined with maroon velvet and has five leather loops securing personal accessories, including a needle, a pair of scissors, an ivory needlework awl, and a slender pencil, this section folds out to expose a notepad beneath.
