Description: 
Rectangular silk-covered spectacles case with one open end; case covered with gold damask from the "great gold curtain" which hung in the Metropolitan Opera House from 1905 to 1940.

Pair of black cotton crocheted lace fingerless mitts, each has a floral design at the top of the hand, there are drawstrings at the wrists, and all outer edges are scalloped; they are framed with dried flowers and an inscription at the bottom.

Johanna Maria (Jenny) Lind (1820-1887) was born in Stockholm and as a child began studying there at the Conservatory of Music. She studied in paris with Manuel Garcia around 1840. Known as the "Swedish Nightingale," she toured Europe in the 1840s and won a popular reputation. She came to the U.S. under the management of P. T. Barnum from 1850-1852, endearing herself to the American public.

Sewing box with velvet pin cusion on top painted with political campaign slogan, "OLD HICKORY/ FOREVER," surrounded with floral and leaf garland; the box is covered with rainbow colored corrugated paper and the edges are trimmed with gold embossed paper; the lid is hinged at the back, and when opened, there is a lithograph portrait of Andrew Jackson, the inside is lined with pink paper.

Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) began public life in 1796, entering the House when his Tennessee became a state. Militarily, he became famous for his victory at the Battle of New Orleans. Although he lost the 1824 presidential race to John Q. Adams, he won in 1828 on his increasing popularity as a "man of the people." In fact many of his democratic principles are retained in the Democratic party.
