Ivory brisé fan with square-tipped sticks joined by ivory-colored silk ribbon; guards with intricate relief carving and sticks with framed pagodas, floral motifs, and central shield of solid ivory on ribbed ground.

In a letter dated April 1961, the donor explains that this fan was found during the Civil War period and given to her father, who later passed it on to her. She quotes from "The Battle of Port Royal, The First Union Victory of the Civil War": "'Plunder' was lying about begging us to pick it up. . . . My men brought me things continually. I took a sword and sash of some high officer, and a very pretty fan."
