According to accession records, this cane was made from wood of the battleship "Monitor."
The USS "Monitor" was an iron-hulled steamship built by during the American Civil War. It was the first ironclad ship commissioned by the Union Navy. It was designed by John Ericsson, a statue of whom is located in Central Park holding a model of the warship. The "Monitor" was constructed at ironworks in both Brooklyn and Manhattan.
