Oval cast bronze souvenir ashtray of the U.S.S. Honolulu with an image of the ship steaming toward an island with a hut and palm trees; four depressions for setting down cigarettes on the raised flat lip; lip inscribed, "LAUNCHED/ U.S.S. HONOLULU/ AUG 26TH 1937/ NAVY YARD N.Y."

This souvenir was probably distributed at a reunion of the Thomas Hunter Association of P.S. No. 35 in New York City, founded to commemorate the educator Thomas Hunter. Hunter began his teaching career at P.S. 35 in 1850, organized the first evening high school in 1866, and founded the Normal College of New York City in 1869, now called Hunter College in his honor.

Description:
U-shaped floral wreath of hand-knit human hair with pearl-white beads set in the centers of some of the flowers; in the center of the wreath is a floral bunch and "1862" made of human hair; above the wreath are the intials, "M. A. R." of human hair; all sewn to a white mat and placed in a deep wooden oval frame with an interior band of gilt beaded moulding and outer frame decorated with floral decoration.

This hair wreath was made by Martha A. Rice (b.1844), in 1862, at the age of 18, in Boston, MA. It took two years to make on knitting needles. In 1869, Martha married Nelson S. Cobleigh and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In 1872, unbeknownst to Martha, Mr. Cobleigh entered the wreath in the Northern Ohio Fair. It was awarded the silver medal in the "Best Display of Hairwork." The basket of flowers was added later and was made of family hair: Martha's, Nelson's, and their five children.

The Empire State building, world's tallest until the 1970s, was built by the firm of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon with structural collabortion by the Starrett Bros. and Eken. It broke records not only for height, but for speed of construction. Demolition of the old Waldorf Astoria took place on Oct. 1, 1929, and by May 1, 1931, the 102- story building was completed, fourty-five days ahead of schedule. Investors for the project included John Raskob, Pierre S. duPont, and Alfred E. Smith.
