Description: 
Glass decanter jug with silver overlay, broken in two pieces; broken at the naming of the facsimile of Robert Fulton's steamship "Clermont" in 1909; decanter jug has stopper with pointed finial, three-way pouring spout, strap handle, and elongated bulbous body; all with silver overlay with engraved floral decoration.

This decanter jug was broken at the naming ceremony of the "Clermont," a facsimile of the steamship designed by Robert Fulton. The duplicate "Clermont" was launched July 10, 1909 at the Staten Island Shipbuilding Works for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration. This jug was filled with water from an old well on the Livingston country seat, "Clermont," by Mrs. Alice Crary Sutcliffe, great-granddaughter of Robert Fulton.

The 1956 Republican National Convention was held by the Republican Party of the United States at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California, from August 20 to August 23, 1956. U.S. Senator William F. Knowland was temporary chairman and former speaker of the House Joseph W. Martin, Jr. served as permanent chairman. It renominated President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon as the party's candidates for the 1956 presidential election. On August 23, 1956, singer Nat King Cole spoke to those present at the Convention.
