In an advertisement in The New York Times from July 2, 1957, the Seamen's Bank for Savings offered a free Jolly Sailor Coin Bank to be "given to everyone who opens a new savings account of $5 or more--as long as the supply lasts." Soon after, the then-Assistant Director and Librarian James J. Heslin requested an example to be preserved in the New-York Historical Society "since we collect business advertising for our museum and library [letter, July 5, 1957]".
