Pull toy consisting of clown with wooden limbs jointed at hips and shoulders mounted on rectangular wooden base with four wooden wheels; base and wheels are painted black, and base has patterned paper glued to top; clown has bisque flange head and is dressed in long-sleeved tan shirt belted at waist with lace trim on cuffs, collar, and hem, striped trousers and jester's cap with bell; rods attached to rear axle make arms and legs move.

Doll with bisque socket head, blond wig glued to pate, sleeping eyes, open mouth, and pink tinted cheeks; composition body with ball and socket joints at shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, and swivel hands with separate fingers; yellow satin dress over pink lace-trimmed petticoat, with yellow stockings and white leather boots with yellow laces, light brown fur-trimmed coat with yellow satin lining, fur muff, leather gloves, and cap lined with purple velvet and trimmed with braid, rhinestones, and feathers.

According to a document found in the curatorial files, this doll was dressed by Mrs. Grover Cleveland for sale at the Columbian Exposition in remnants from the dress she wore to her husband's inauguration. The doll was given to Elizabeth Levy, of New York City, in 1893 or 1894, and remained in her family until its acquisition by Katharine Prentis Murphy in 1961.

Windup toy composed of doll mounted on tricycle; All-in-One composition doll with gray hair attached to head, black glass pupilless eyes, and open mouth; slightly bent arms, molded hands holding mallets, and white painted legs with black painted shoes; brown velvet jacket with yellow braid trim, pink skirt with blue braid trim, and green hat with yellow braid trim and pink feather; green painted tricycle with mechanism mounted under seat; when toy is pushed or pulled, doll's arms rise and fall, causing the mallets to hit the gong, and the bell mounted at back to ring.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. Walking doll with bisque shoulder head, yellow molded hair, blue painted eyes, closed mouth, and pink tinted cheeks; torso and skirt form made of fabric glued to stiff backing (possibly cardboard) concealing clockwork mechanism underneath, with hole at side of form for key; biscuit-colored, short-sleeved shirtwaist with purple ribbon sash and gathered skirt sewn on at waist, over stiff form; brass leg casings shaped like boots extend from bottom of "skirt."

Gallery Label: 
The mechanism was patented in 1862 by Enoch Rice Morrison. Most of the dolls made under this patent were apparently manufactured by Martin & Runyan, a New York firm, but Caroline Goodfellow conjectures that others were probably made by several people (See Publications).
