This lantern is most likely associated with the railroads. It was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

This coach horn was used on the Mail Coach Lightning. The Lightning was built for T. Suffern Tailer of New York City, from specifications obtained from the Royal Post Office, London, of the fastest Mail coach then known, the Mercury. Mr. Tailer beat the Mercury's record with his coach on a trip from Paris to Trouville, 140 miles in 10 hrs. 40 min. on July 12, 1892. The coach was presented to the donor in 1927. He won the Koch Memorial cup with it in 1929, for champion road team of America.
