This milestone was originally located on the west side of Third Avenue between 116th and 117th streets in Manhattan. It remained in place until 1927, when it was broken by a truck and left unnoticed on the sidewalk for three months. A resident of the block, N. Salinitro, notified the Society and the stone was brought in for preservation.

This milestone, from the series of 1822-23, was originally located on the west side of the Bowery, opposite Rivington Street. Marble cutter Francis Kain (ca. 1786-1844), who had a marble yard at 359 Greenwich Street, supplied and cut the stones for this series. This milestone remained in place until the spring of 1926, when it was struck and broken by a coal wagon drawn by a runaway horse.
