Description:
Large sheet iron oil or possibly candle lantern; elaborate, multi-tiered top with heart-shaped piercings, capped by diamond-shaped finial; lower frame with scalloped, openwork trim surrounding top and four trapezoidal sides, three with fixed glass panels and one with a glass door, joining a small square base with heart-shaped piercings; traces of red paint; attached chain not original.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

This surveyor's monument stood at the corner of Fourth Avenue and East 26th Street, where it had been placed under direction of the Commissioners appointed by the New York Legislature in 1807 to lay out streets on Manhattan Island north of Houston Street. It was dug up in 1890 during excavations for the old Madison Square Garden and was on display there near the Tower elevator until 1908.

Milestones performed an essential service for travelers in early America. The earliest milestones in Manhattan were placed along the west side of the Post Road leading from New York to Kingsbridge in 1769. This milestone, from the series of 1822-1823, was installed at Third Avenue and 77th Street. Marble cutter Francis Kain (ca. 1786-1844), who had a marble yard at 359 Greenwich Street, supplied and cut the stones for this series.
