The subject was the second son of William Mitchell and Mary Penfold (Berrien) Mitchell of New York. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Columbia College and later worked as a dry goods commission merchant and auctioneer. This miniature is a reproduction of a detail of another miniature in the Society's collection (1966.19), in which Cornelius is pictured with his brother, Edward.
