Her husband, who was a director and at one time president of the Fairbanks Company, maker of scales, died in Paris in 1926. The Wellses maintained homes in New York and Newport, R.I.; Mrs. Wells sold their fashionable estate, Chetwode, at Newport to John Jacob Astor III the year before her death.

She founded La Napoule Art Foundation-Henry Clews Memorial on the French Riviera to promote Franco-American cultural relations.
