The subject, a native of Litchfield, Connecticut, established a law practice in Kingston, New York, and was subsequently elected to the state assembly (1820) and the United States Congress (1821). He next served as judge of the Dutchess County Circuit Court and in 1851 became a judge of the Court of Appeals of the State of New York and presiding judge from 1853 to 1855.

The subject was born in Philadelphia, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca (Lehman) Wood. After several unsuccessful starts in business in New York City he became associated in 1834 with Tammany Hall, and from that point his commercial and political fortunes soared. He was twice mayor of New York (1855-58 and 1861-63), and served in Congress off and on for about the last twenty years of his life.
