The subject's original name was James Frederick Dyckman Smith. When, as the principal heir, he inherited the Dyckman lands and estate of his uncle Isaac Dyckman (1794-1868), he took the name Isaac Michael Dyckman. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his daughter.

A consulting surgeon at many New York hospitals, he wrote "The Origin of Bellevue Hospital" which was published in The NEw -York Historical Society Quarterly (37, July 1953, 204-27). A member of numerous medical organizations, he was a distinguished surgeion and after a long career he retired in 1852. Dr. Beekman was a member of The New-York Historical Society; he was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1935 and served as the 23rd president of the Society from 1947 to 1956.
