This study is roughly blocked-in monochrome by the artist. No finished exhibition painting has come to light that relates to this sepia study which may depict a subject near Jackson Falls in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Durand's energized and calligraphic brushwork in this remarkable monochromatic landscape is a tour de force of both drawing and painting.
