Jacob Jennings Brown commanded troops in western New York during the War of 1812 and was promoted to general in 1814. In 1821 he was made commander-in-chief of the United States army, a position he held until his death. This painting is based on a full-length portrait by John Wesley Jarvis, one of four portraits of military heroes of the War of 1812 commissioned by the City of New York for City Hall in 1815.
