Influenced by the architecture that he saw on a trip to Europe in 1885, Cooper made a specialty of painting cityscapes. When he settled in New York, Cooper found that Manhattan provided both the charm of the Old World, as well as the drama of the modern urban metropolis. Cooper here depicts the Woolworth (1913) and Singer (1911) buildings, at that time the first and second tallest buildings in the world.
