This picture was purchased by Robert L. Stuart on December 20, 1859 at a sale of Rossiter's pictures held in the rooms of the National Academy of Design in New York. A sketchbook of Rossiter's, also in the Society's collection (1956.68), bears his preliminary graphite study of the painting, dated February 23, 1854. The sketchbook also contains portraits, figure studies, and landscapes, many of which are unidentified and undated.
