This painting along with Durand's other "Head of a Roman" paintings were exhibited at the National Academy in 1842. This is one of eight studies of elderly men painted by Durand in 1840-41, of which the Society owns four.

At the time of his retirement Ely had attained the rank of major general in the U.S. army. He served in the Philippines in 1899-1901, again in 1907-1912, and was commander of the Fifth Division of the Third Army Corps, American Expeditionary Force, in Europe in 1918. His portrait is one of the group of American portraits given to the Society by the artist.
