The subject was born in Brooklyn, graduated from Yale, and did graduate work at Columbia in sociology and economics. He became managing editor of "The Independent" in New York in 1897, and from 1913 to 1921 was its owner-editor. In 1925 he was named president of Rollins College, a position he held for many years. Holt was active in peace movements and received many honorary degrees and awards.
