The subject was the son of Asahel and Eunice (Wetmore) Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. He studied law after graduating from Yale and set up his practice in New York in the 1790s. He became a member of The New-York Historical Society in 1805, and served as chairman of its standing committee. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his son-in-law.

The subject was the son of Johannes Schuyler, Jr., and Cornelia (Van Cortlandt) Schuyler. In 1775 he was a delegate to the second Continental Congress and helped organize the Continental Army, in which he was appointed a major general. He resigned his commission in 1779, but served as an advisor on currency matters and Indian affairs. Thereafter he held one public office or another in New York State until 1798; he was twice elected to the U.S. Senate.

Draper received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836 and later joined the faculty of the University of the City of New York as professor of chemistry and physiology. He participated in the organization of its medical school in 1841, and later became its president. Dr. Draper was very interested in photography and was reportedly the first to make a daguerreotype in New York. This posthumous portrait may have been based on a portrait of Draper by Joseph Fagnani from ca. 1872.
