In 1791 Charles W. Peale painted a portrait of Hamilton for his museum in Philadelphia; this portrait, now in Independence Hall, shows the subject in civilian dress. The unidentified artist of the Society's portrait copied this likeness, except that Hamilton is shown in military uniform. William Sawitzky has suggested that the artist may be a member of the Peale family.
