Wilhelmine Joan Steeg was the daughter of Francis Steeg and Emma A. (Scheidweiler) Steeg of New York. She married J. Phillip Schmand (1871-1942) on December 27, 1911. In 1943 Mrs. Schmand, who was an associate member of N-YHS from that year until her death, gave the Society a number of portraits by her husband who had died the year before; among these were five of herself.

The subject, a New York merchant, was the son of Barent Rynders. Sr. (d. 1682), an immigrant from Holland, and his wife Elizabeth Van Cortlandt. He married Hester Leisler, daughter of Jacob Leisler, in 1696. This portrait, by an unidentified artist, is similar in style to portraits by Evert Duyckinck, III (ca. 1677-1727).

Description:
Genre painting that depicts a female employment office; the two women off to the left respond to the ad in the Sun newspaper, which is crumpled at one of the women's feet; the woman sitting in the chair is the potential employer; in the center, is the agent presiding over the of the office; his duties, which are stated on a sign on the wall next to him, say that he is "warranted" to provide domestic employers who are "honest".
