The Le Conte family lived in the area of New Rochelle, New York. This portrait of an unidentified member of that family appears to be by the same artist who painted the portraits of Abram Gouveneur (1671-1740) and his wife, Mary Leisler (d. 1747), in the Museum of the City of New York.

Gallery Label:
Elizabeth Gatfield was the wife of Leonard Rogers of New York. Judging by the style of the dress and hat she wears, her portrait must have been painted about 1785-90. The painting, a gift to the Society from the subject's great-great-grandson, represents a survival of the provincial Georgian-rococo style in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War.

Gallery Label:
Gelston was active as a legislator in New York State during the Revolution and the years that followed. In 1801 President Jefferson appointed him collector of customs for the Port of New York, a position he held for nineteen years. In this portrait he holds a book which bears the title "Collection Duties," in reference to the office he held when the portrait was painted.
