Description: 

Lacquered papier-mâché tray; flat, rectangular base with raised sides; central image shows a painted scene from the sea battle between the U.S. frigate "Chesapeake" and the British vessel, H.M.S. "Shannon" during the War of 1812, depicting the commencement of the action, with the two frigates exchanging gunfire at close range, off the coast of Boston, Massachusetts on June 1, 1813. The rim is decorated with a floral and foliate gilt border.

Charles Eastlake was born in Plymouth, England, and would distinguish himself as an artist and author. In addition, he served as keeper of the National Gallery of England from 1843 to 1847 and director from 1855; he was knighted in 1850, the same year he was named president of the Royal Academy, a position he held until 1865.
