During his later years, the artist camped and painted in the Adirondacks, usually in the company of his family. Durand's panoramic view of Adirondack forest, lake, and distant mountain peaks has an expansive impact that belies the modest size of the canvas. His command of atmospheric perspective is also evident in the conviction with which miles of wilderness forest recede below us toward the distant lake and, beyond, to remote mountains blue on the horizon. Today these lands form the Adirondack Park and Forest Preserve, which was set aside in 1892 to remain "forever wild."
