The subject, a native of Vermont and a graduate of Middlebury College (1839), initially pursued a career in law, but ultimately established his reputation as a writer of humorous verse. Several books of his poetry were published, including "Clever Stories of Many Nations Rendered in Rhyme" (1865) and "Leisure Day Rhymes" (1875). Saxe lived in Albany and in Brooklyn in the 1860s and 70s; he died in Albany in 1887. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter-in-law.
