A well-known portrait and historical painter, Powell was born in New York but grew up in Cincinnati where he studied painting with James Henry Beard. At the age of seventeen he came to New York to study with Henry Inman. His murals depicting De Soto's discovery of the Mississippi River and Commodore Perry's victory at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1812 adorn public buildings in Washington, D.C.

Cora Urquhart, a native of New Orleans, became the first wife of James Brown Potter (1853-1922), a member of a distinguished New York family, in 1877. After gaining some recognition as an amateur actress in New York, Mrs. Potter made her professional debut in 1887 at the Haymarket Theatre in London. She is shown here in her role in 1895 as Charlotte Corday in the play of the same name.

The subject, a Protestant Episcopal clergyman, was born in Schenectady, New York. After graduating from the Virginia Theological Seminary he held pastorates in Troy, New York (1859-66), at Trinity Church, Boston (1866-68), and at Grace Church, New York (1868-83). As bishop of New York (1887-1908) he was a major figure in the campaign against corruption in the city, and he carried on the building of the cathedral of St. John the Divine, having laid the cornerstone in 1892.

Murphy operated a sailmaking and marine supply business on South Street in New York City. He served as a city fire warden for over ten years, as an alderman, and as a trustee of the Public School Society of New York. He was a member of the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and contributed generously to the Union cause during the Civil War. A number of his business and personal papers are in the Society's manuscript collection.

A native of Mercer, Maine, the subject moved to New York in 1882 and established himself as a magazine publisher. Foremost among the magazines he published were "Munsey's Magazine" and "The Argosy" (later "The Argosy All-Story Weekly"). He also purchased and published several newspapers, among them the New York "Evening Sun," one his greatest successes. Christy published some of his illustrations in Munsey's publications.

This portrait, a gift to the Society from Poe's literary executor, was reportedly painted from life in 1845, the year Poe wrote "The Raven." In 1844 his wanderings from job to job had taken him to New York, where he became editor of the "Broadway Journal," and where Osgood painted his portrait. Poe knew Osgood's wife, who was a poet of some accomplishment.
