Christina Mary Nichols (ca. 1895-?) was the daughter of George Livingston Nichols, a prominent New York corporation lawyer in the 1880s and 1890s, and Mary (Ruxton) Nichols. She married Walter Kerr Rainsford (ca. 1882-1947) in 1923. This portrait, which shows the subject at the age of about twelve, was probably painted in Paris.

George Newbold was a merchant in New York and was one of the first directors, along with Archibald Gracie, Oliver Wolcott, and William Bayard, of the Bank of America. Newbold became its fourth president. This portrait was painted after Peale's second trip to Europe in 1831, when he had established his studio in New York. The portrait is unsigned but attributed to Peale on stylistic grounds. The costume and hair suggest a date of the early 1830s.

The family of William Hude Neilson established itself in New York before the Revolution. His grandfather, also called William, was a prosperous merchant and shipowner, and his father, William, Jr., continued the family business and was a successful executive of marine insurance companies. William H. Neilson, the eldest son of William, Jr., worked as a broker in Wall Street. The subject is represented at the age of about thirty in this portrait. His attire suggests a date of ca. 1840.

After working for a few years as a clerk in a commission house, he established his own business and became one of the most successful financiers in the city. Lawrence was a prosperous merchant and a charter member of the New York Stock Exchange. From 1809 to 1816 he served as an alderman of New York. Lawrence Park, in his study of the artist ("Gilbert Stuart," vol. 1, 1926, p. 465), said this portrait was painted in Boston and assigns the dates 1812-15 to it. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
