Jarvis's original portrait of Randolph, a powerful leader in the U.S. House of Representatives in the early decades of the nineteenth century, was painted in Baltimore in 1811 "for one of the Ridgeleys," according to Washington Irving, who saw it on the artist's easel. Irving received permission to have a copy made and Jarvis produced this replica soon thereafter.

The subject, a native of Morton, Illinois, attended Harvard Law School and established his practice in Chicago. In 1933 he was appointed one of the three directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority as a result of his legal experience with large public utility corporations. His book, "TVA: Democracy on the March" (1944), describes that enormous project which included land conservation and reclamation, reforestation, and the production and sale of electrical power.

A native of Southold, Long Island, the subject attended Yale and went on to study law. From 1779 to 1783 he was a representative from New York to the Continental Congress and also a member of the state assembly. In 1784 he was made clerk of Suffolk County and remained in that office almost without interruption until his death. This portrait of him is believed to be a replica of an original painted by Earl in 1792 (private collection, Boston).

Estelle Anna Blanche Robinson, the daughter of John N. Robinson, was born near Baltimore. After her marriage to Sylvanus D. Lewis in 1841 she resided in Brooklyn until 1858 when she was divorced. She lived abroad thereafter and, using the pen name "Stella," was a frequent contributor of poems and essays to periodicals and literary magazines. Several volumes of her works were published, including "Records of the Heart" (1884) and "Sappho: A Tragedy in Five Acts" (1875).

The Hindu religious reformer and scholar Rammohun Roy grew up in British-ruled India. In 1814 he founded in Calcutta a spiritual society that led to a new formulation of Hindu theism; he denounced Hinduism as old and outmoded, attacking its caste system, worship of idols, and animal sacrifices. He also sought for Indians greater freedom, better education, and technological advancement. His portrait was painted in London by Rembrandt Peale some six weeks before his death.

General Lewis was born in New York, the son of Francis Lewis, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He fought in the Revolutionary War and afterward turned to the profession of law, serving as attorney general of the state of New York and subsequently on the state supreme court; from 1801 to 1804 he was the chief justice of that body. In 1804 he was elected governor of New York, defeating Aaron Burr. He was the sixth president of The New-York Historical Society (1832-35).
