A native of Savannah, Georgia, the subject established a law firm in San Francisco with his father and brother in 1850 and quickly acquired a fortune. He maintained homes in New York, Savannah, and Newport, R.I., and was recognized as the leader of "the Four Hundred" (a phrase he coined himself), the elite of American society. Like many of his social set, he traveled abroad a great deal, especially to London and Paris, and it was in Paris that he posed for this portrait.

The Gowanus Canal was built in the 1840s to encourage the industrial development that eventually lined its banks, and was critical to the residential and commercial development of Red Hook. The canal, which was heavily polluted for over a hundred years, has recently been cleaned up, and the old industrial buildings have been reclaimed by artists who have established both homes and studios in what were once rundown, neglected structures.

The famous Seneca Indian chief Sagoyewatha was also called Red Jacket because of the succession of red jackets he wore, the first given to him by a British officer during the Revolutionary War. A leader of his people and a great orator, he advocated friendship and co-existence with the white man but asserted the independence and ownership rights of the Indians. In 1792 Red Jacket received from George Washington a silver medal, which he is shown wearing in this portrait, painted during a visit to New York City in 1828.

Lieutenant Gray was the son of the artist, Henry Peters Gray. At the age of nineteen he enlisted in the Union army and was commissioned a first lieutenant and adjutant in 1864. He is depicted in the uniform of the Civil War, with broad-brimmed hat, his sword in his left hand, and shoulder straps that indicate his rank.
