Miss Cary was one of nine children born to Robert and Elizabeth (Jessup) Cary on their pioneer homestead a few miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a self-educated poet, and her literary interests carried her to New York in 1850. Cary was the author of "Pictures of Country Life" (1859), "The Bishop's Son" (1867), and "Snow-Berries" (1867), and a frequent contributor to such popular periodicals as "Harper's," Putnam's Monthly," and "Atlantic Monthly."
