The subject was born near Peterburg, Va. He was a hero of the War of 1812 by the end of which he had risen to the rank of brevet major general. In 1841 he became general-in-chief of the United States army, and in 1847 personally led the American forces in the Mexican War. He was the Whig candidate for president in 1852, but was defeated by Franklin Pierce. With the outbreak of the Civil War he remained loyal to the Union, but resigned his command in November 1861.
