Candace was the daughter of Thomas Mason Wheeler and Candace (Thurber) Wheeler. In 1866 she was married to Lewis Atterbury Stimson, and they went to Paris where he studied medicine. After earning his medical degree he established his practice in New York about 1875. The subject was the mother of Henry Lewis Stimson, the noted lawyer and statesman.
