Gold watch fob with amethyst monogram seal; fob has hollow finial bail with knop, grape bunches in relief above large grape bunch which is set on the base, the base is vertically ribbed and is decorated with grapevine around bottom edge near bezel; seal is beveled and inscribed "TDL."

Gold copper-gilt watch fob with seal impression; barrel shaped bail attached to arched frame for seal, the frame is screwed the seal allowing both pieces to swivel completely; seal has carnelian on one side, rectangular seal in relief on opposite side with hatchmark design.

Description:
Gold watch fob with charm and beveled quartz seal; flat braided chain link chain made adjustable with a charm which allows the chain to slide through one side only, the charm is medallion shaped with rinceau design on both sides and a faceted half sphere garnet on obverse; the seal is suspended from the chain with a hollow finial bail with knop, attached to gold mount with scrolled acanthus leaves, the base is ribbed around the top surface and worked with geometric designs around the bottom edge; the seal depicts the helmet and chest guard of a suit of armor above a crest with a fully branched tree with a fish beneath, and an inscribed banner beneath the crest across the bottom.

Silver gilt watch fob with faceted citrine quartz seal; bail is hollow finial with knop affixed to fob with scrolled foliate garland which secures the bezel; silver throughout is decorated with acorns and acanthus leaves; the seal depicts a shirt cuffed hand clutching a full bloom rose, set above a crest with a vertical long stemmed rose on each side, inscribed banner below.

These cuff links belonged to Horatio Gates (1728/9-1806). Born in England, he served in Nova Scotia under Cornwallis in the British army as a youth. He came to America in 1772, purchasing land in what is now West Virginia. Siding with the colonies when the Revolution broke out, he joined the Continental Army and was given the rank of brigadier general. In 1790 he freed his slaves, sold his plantation, and moved to New York. He served in the New York State legislature from 1800 to 1801.
